The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
